This page was created in support of the Harris Family who endured a horrific auto accident on Monday, August 5th, 2013 in rural Osceola County in Florida. The accident injured Laly (Mom), Denise (10 years old) and Heidi (6 years old). "Mighty Heidi" fought as hard as she could, but her injuries were too much for her little body to endure. She passed away on August 6th. Laly (Luz) and Denise still have a difficult road ahead, so we have setup this page to share their journey and help them with all of the expenses they might incur due to this tragic accident. If you are able to give, please click on the DONATE button below to make a secure donation that will go directly to this family. You can also share pictures msmightyheidi@gmail.com

Thank you to Lois for organizing this wonderful Zumbathon today at the Child's Park YMCA for the Harris Family. Over $1,500 raised. Lots of energy, it was amazing! You can see Luz' sister here in the video leading one of Heidi's favorite Zumba songs "Sadi Gali".

There was so much Zumba love in the house. A TON of other instructors showed up to lead songs and take part in this event. You can see them all pictured here.

Update on Denise

Denise is improving physically. She wants a lot of hugs, and she is ready to swim. She is answering questions, but is barely speaking. The music therapist came in today, you can view some video of that here: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10153104315230290&set=vb.583709605013369&type=2&theater

Denise is out of PICU

The oldest was upgraded out of PICU, and she knows that her sister passed away. I told her that Heidi gave her the doggy as a gift. Denise hugs, waves, and kisses the stuffed doggy.

Life is too short

Please, take many photos, video and voice recordings of your loved ones. I have thousands of photos, but only a few video and voice recordings.

Cherish the moments you are with your loved ones and hold them tight. Tell them you love them. Go on adventures and make life fun. Get off the couch and enjoy the world. I miss you Heidi! I will always think of you. ~Daddy~

Family tragedy: 6-year-old dies a day after Osceola crash

By Susan Jacobson, Orlando Sentinel

A 6-year-old St. Petersburg girl who was trapped in a water-filled ditch after a crash in rural Osceola County died Tuesday, her uncle said.
Passers-by and firefighters dived into the water to rescue Heidi Harris after her family's Toyota minivan was hit by a tractor-trailer Monday afternoon, knocking it into the ditch, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The truck driver, identified as 29-year-old Yisnel Gonzalez of Miami, was behind the van, which had slowed to make a left turn into a driveway near Rogers Road. He braked and steered into the southbound lane but was unable to avoid a collision, investigators said.

Heidi was taken to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce, where she died at 5:55 p.m., relatives posted on Facebook. "Mighty Heidi Ann Harris," the page says. "The light from your smile will always shine bright."

Heidi, her 10-year-old sister Denise Harris and their mother, Luz Harris, 30, were on a trip to Wild Florida, a wildlife park and airboat-tour business south of St. Cloud, relatives said. Heidi was a playful child who loved animals. That included her bulldog, Cookie, who survived the crash, and also chickens and spiders.

"Animals were her joy," her uncle Al Rivera said. "She wanted to be a vet."

Heidi was strapped into a booster seat, but the worst of her injuries came from being trapped underwater, said Sgt. Kim Montes, a Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman. She was on life support early Tuesday, Rivera said.

Denise was recovering Tuesday at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando. Luz "Laly" Harris was released from a Melbourne hospital Tuesday. Gonzalez wasn't hurt. Trevor Pearson was among several people who stopped to help. As they waited for ambulances to arrive, passers-by and firefighters dived underwater to extricate the family from the minivan, then placed them in neck braces and on backboards, he said. Rescuers tried to revive Heidi, but she did not respond, Pearson said. Meanwhile, he held Luz Harris' hand.

"She asked me, 'Where are my kids?' " Pearson said. "I said, 'Ma'am, they've already taken them. They're going to be OK.' But I didn't know that at that point." Luz Harris' husband, Dennis Harris, 34, is a sergeant first class with the Florida National Guard who was at military training at Fort Gordon, Ga., when the accident happened. He returned to Florida to be with his family. Dennis Harris attended Lake Mary High School, according to his Facebook page. Among the comments posted there was, "Love you beautiful Heidi."

There's also a family support page: https://www.facebook.com/teamharrisfamily.

It's not clear why Luz Harris was turning into the driveway, which is about 30 miles south of the park. Troopers will conduct a traffic-homicide investigation to see whether charges or citations are warranted, Montes said.

Sad news to share

Thank you to everyone who has joined in prayer for the Harris family. Unfortunately, little Mighty Heidi Ann Harris grew her angel wings tonight at 17:55. She fought until the end, but her injuries were too much for her little 6 year old body to endure. Please continue to pray for Dennis, Luz (Laly) and Denise and their entire family. We will post ways to help them ASAP, but PLEASE respect their family at this very difficult time. Please keep checking back on this page for updates and details.

Update on Denise

Denise is no longer sedated. Her breathing tubes have been removed. And she is now sleeping and snoring, both great signs. When they took her neck brace off she showed a sign of relief by shrugging her shoulders.
